Mills College Cal. Office of the President P.O. ADDRESS MILLS COLLEGE P.O. CAL.

June 1, 1904.

Dear Mrs. Stanford: -

Though you have no been some time at home, I trust it is not too late to extend a friendly welcome and to express the hope that your long journey has been to you a pleasant and profitable one. I have noticed how you had been gethering new treasures for your already rich and varied museum.

I am writing expecially[sic] to you at this time because I have had for some time certain matters on my mind relative to the advance of educational work on the coast about which I wanted to consult with you, to get your advice and suggestion and I trust co-operation.

We have both at heart, very deeply and truly, I believe, the best interests of the young people of all this part of the country and are trying to see what can be best done to advance their welfare in the future.

Do you think you could so arrange it that we could meet and have a real good heart to heart talk about what will, I believe, be of great value to the future of the work for young women in a moral and educational way? I have long wanted an opportunity of quietly conferring with you and should feet it to be a privilege and pleasure to do so. Could you let me know whether this can be in the near future?

I should be most happy to have a visit from you here at the college where it is now so quiet and beautiful, but if more concenient [sic] for you, I would come to you with pleasure.

Assuring you of my kindest regards and best wishes for you in all your varied interests, I am,

Yours sincerely, Susan [L?] Mills

MILLS COLLEGE, CAL. OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

P.O. ADDRESS MILSS COLLEGE P.O. CAL.

July 9th, 1904.

My dear Mrs. Stanford: -

I beg your pardon for the long delay in replying to your kind letter. I have been absent from home for several weeks and found a great accumulation of mail on my return. I needed the rest and change.

I wish our trustees would take the responsibility and care from me. You feel that yours depend upon you too much, and so do I. I congratulate you, however, upon having an abundance of means so that you do not feel, as I do, obliged to look carefully after the details during vacation as well as in term time, that we may be sure of meeting our expenses.

The matter concering which I wished to talk with you was in regard to co-education. We both believe in it, at the same time our practice is different, but the general sentiment of the community here and at the east is changing, and it is though better that young men and young women during their undergraduate work should not be taught toghter. It was concerning this whole subject that I though I would like to talk with you after your long experience and observation.

I have a great horror of appearing in print in any way, and so I am very careful as to what I write. I know you will appreciate my feeling. Sometime possibly you will feel that you have the leisure that that I can have a quiet talk with you.

I hope that the summer will be a restful one to you, and that you will have more and more comfort in the great work you have inaugurated. I am sure that your dear ones in heaven are with you in sympathy all the time.

With kindest regards, believe me, Yours very truly,

Susan [L.?] Mills

My wish is so much humbler than yours, for I can only give myself & my small means but I rejoice in all God gives you to do. You as I do walk alone since our beloved passed into the Fathers house & yet-- I feel they are not far from us and
