Respected Madam:
Since your lamented husband went beyond, the sympathy of his many friends has been with you, and their prayers that you should be spared to continue the great and good work so generously begun. The decision of the Courts meets with universal approbation, and as former citizen of California I now rejoice in that California will now possess the greatest and most liberally endowed institution of learning in the world.
The "Governor" as we always liked to call him, was as enthusiastic supporter of the principles of Protection of American Industry, as he was a liberal patron of learning, the arts and sciences. I beg to hand you herewith the last signed pledge of membership in the American Protective Tariff League, his original autograph appearing in our album of "One thousand defenders" which was signed in 1883.

THE AMERICAN PROTECTIVE TARIFF LEAGUE
Translation to the more beautiful life releases him from all the cares of this, but your wifely devotion and determination to carry on the good work for him has suggested to me that were you made aware of his close relations to our great American Organization, you might decide to continue for him, or better yet, in your own name the annual contributions to the work of the League. If so, I will be most happy to have you sign the enclosed blank form of membership, or what is better still, I will be happy to call on you with the original album that you may add your own name to his.
I await your pleasure in the matter and beg to sign myself,
Your sincere friend,
Max Gracht
Financial Secretary

Mrs Leland Stanford.
Dear Madam.
At the instigation of my father in law, Mr Edward Pearson, who is favorably known to Mr L Stanford, having worked in his employ years ago, I have engrossed and designed a memento of your dear departed son which you will be pleased to accept with the best wishes of myself and him. It is nearly all pen work, and I would have framed it but did not know what frame you might wish. It is original and there is nothing in San Francisco in pen and ink like it, nor is there any one here who has done this original work, but myself. We would therefore thank you to accept it, not for its value but as a tribute to him departed from those who deeply feel the sorrow his sad demise has caused you.
Hoping this will reach you, and wishing you good health and long life
I Remain Your
Humble Servant
