Today I took up a Sunday paper. (I only see old numbers now) - and the first thing I saw, was this headline. I read it carefully through - and I wish - dear, with all my heart that I could give you some comfort.

Did it ever occur to you to wonder why I asked to come and see you, now and then? Had you said "yes," I should have told you long - and long ago - to those who are kind to me. My coming has ever brought good fortune, if this kindness was without any

motive of self-interest. I do not mean financial kindness? simply, such as existed between us, that day you were with me. But, if I am dealt with harshly - unjustly - it is followed by misfortune, to the offender. Not, my dear one, that I ever ask for such things, but they are the most natural sequence, of a wrong, inflicted upon one who deals kindly - with all.

This was why I wanted to come to you, and without one moment of selfish thought - that I might be your mascott [sic]

I wonder if you think of me sometimes? If you would care to know how it is with me? If not, stop here - and cast the page into the grate.

I gave up all idea of taking any land at the cliff. It was too deeply submerged by water - where the price was attainable, (by installments) and the other, was something fabulous. So, I am still here in this little street and longing to get away from many things that are unpleasant - and from the quiet that is not good for my business.

By the most rigid economy in everything - I have so far, managed to eke out my rent - but it is always a question with me. Where the next will come from, and only $14 - The houses are pretty little places, for me or two people - and prettier inside. Than out. I wish you could see how cute the tiny rooms look, with their decorations of - nothing - but pictures. The fist [sic] things guests notice is a table - one that I made myself. The top is a bevel-edged panel with painting on top - and an artistic arrangement of shells for its border.

Beneath a perfect tangle of natural wood -hemlock with its balls, pine with its cones and gnarled scrub oak- with its lovely mosses - and nestled amongst this, a small fish-globe - but as yet, minus the fishes. I think the four rooms in the house would cover the space, in your sitting room on California St. but if it was only on an outside street where some business could find me I'd be content.

With my love to you dear Mrs. Stanford, I am yours most faithfully
