Mrs Leland Stanford Madam,

Incited by the telegram from you to Senator Mitchell, which appeared in the papers this morning, I take the liberty of writing you and enclosing a cutting from a paper in response to Senator Voorhees eulogy.

Where one traducer speaks rancorous words more will be thousands to honor the memory of Leland Stanford, and ready to testify to the nobility of his nature.

The esteem, reverence and admiration I entertained for your husband I trust will be sufficient apology for addressing you.

Respectfully, Jos. Cairn Simpson

From the first time I met you I was struck with the resemblance between husband and wife in the features which elicited fervent admiration, and thereafter both were associated in my mind with the good works, far greater good, more lasting good than ever two people accomplish on this continent.

It may seem out of place for one to do more than to make an acknowledgement of this favor granted, though a more formal reply would be so contrary to my feelings, that

inappropriate as it may appear, this brief testimonial is added.

In wishing you very many returns of New Year days, and with health and strength to carry to the fullest success this great project so auspiciously begun, I only echo the wishes of millions of people, and if at any time I can be of service, to render them will be a source of pleasure to
