Dear Mrs. Stanford:
While I have always unfalterlingly believed that you would triumph in your important legal contest, fortified as you were by Judge Ross' decision (for he is a Judge of unusual ability and character) and have never doubted since his decision the final successful issue, I am none the less glad and thankful that the suspense is at an end, and that you can in truth, as you stated so fitly, be at rest and peace and thankful in your chosen home at Palo Alto, and the educational work to which you are so devoted.
As I have intimated in the past,- amidst all the conflicting interests and the perplexing problems that confuse and bewilder us, we still have, upon scientific grounds alone, due cause for confidence that the human race moves on from its dead self to higher things; but above and beyond all this, dear Madam, there is the sustaining hope and trust in all that is inspiring, and tender, and benificent, based upon the sublime assurance of the best of men that ere wore earth about him, -- our Master and Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ -- to which, I am sure, you are not a stranger.

My dear Mrs. Stanford,
I write, so as to make sure of reaching you - for when I call you may not be in: or you may be too worn to see me. I write to ask you to come and stay with me in my guest home during the pending of your suit and your stay in Washington. I anticipate your suggesting

that your lawyers and others wish to see you and that a hotel gives you more freedom by assuring you. I can guarantee you absolute freedom from intrusions with a room for consultations; and away from passing or any inconveniences and a floor in my house where no foot steps would enter. I am not claiming [] intimacy in any family by giving you this invitation-only I have honored and liked you and sympathized with you always and you have been kind to me and mine in word and deed. You were kind to my son when there was a determined effort here to injure him + and while I have my reason I shall not forget that kindness.
If you come to me, it need not be announced - You can come and be to myself as though you were in your own home

and I shall put that I have been privileged by entertaining you. I venture to express the idea that the closing scenes in the Supreme Court yesterday (I was present) as [?] well for your success.
