[about the Monument at Monterey]

WESTERN GRANITE & MARBLE CO. FIRST STREET, San Jose, Cal. July 1 1890

Mrs Leland Stanford Dear Madam

You have been pleased to give our Mr. Combs an order for a Statue from Crystal Lake granite of Fr. Junipero Serra, to be placed at Montery [sic] this autumn. Now I have the very unpleasant duty to perform of saying to you that owing to the great amt of snow & ice - just think of it and in Cala too, in the Crystal Lake Quarries near Cisco, we have been unable as yet, to get that large stone out, and the Board of Directors at our last meeting instructed me to inform you of this fact, and to ask you to grant us further time in which to complete the work. It is no small task to deliver in San Jose a block of granite weighing about 35 tons, and it requires time
