Times when looking upon his photograph which hangs on the wall of my front room I am reminded of his true and friendly kindness to me Would that there was more such noble hearted ones in this world for he was allways doing something for anothers pleasure Again I thank you kind friend sincerely hoping this New Year may prove to be a Happy and pleasant one to you May your daily walks through life be surrounded with Happiness And may our Heavenly Father have a kind and watchful care over you rendering you comfort in your bad hours of bereavement with kindest of wishes and true and heartfelt thanks from me and my family.

Happy New Year

Sacramento Jan 8th 1895

Mrs J. L. Stanford Kind and ever remembered Friend

I intended to write you a New Years letter but owing to the sickness of my wife and grand child I had to postpone doing so Myself and family are more than thankful to you for the kind deed of friendship in having Col Crocker raise my wages from $29.50 to $39.50 for the last six months I have had very hard work to support my family and I often think what I would have done had it not been for your kindness in the hour of need I am still a cripple unable to work caused by scatica rheumatis I miss my dear departed friend who when in life was a dear and true friend to me had he been my Father he could not have been kinder to me for he was ever willing and ready to do me a friendly deed of true friendship and it is with thoughts of happiness I recall to mind his true friendship to me and mine often
