My dear Mrs. Stanford:

May I as one of the women to be first connected with your University, offer my sincere and heartfelt congratulations to you. May I tell you how much we appreciate what you have done for us and how deeply we have felt for you during these three most trying years? I am proud to be connected with Stanford University, proud to be one of those connected with it, during its years of struggle.

I submit it for your examination, with the hope that it will prove so far "suitable" that you can sign it in the near future.

Mrs Jane L. Stanford Menlo Park, Calif.

Madam:

I desire to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 4th last regarding a lot on the University Grounds.

You say that if I will have a suitable lease drawn up, you will sign it as soon as the Court gives the authority to execute such deed.

About a fortnight ago, wishing to see what special form of lease had been in use here, I obtained from the Hodges the one I enclose.

I have made some {interlocutions?} so as to make it read in accordance with my application, as {have particularly set forth ?} in my interview with Senator Stanford.
