SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.,

June 21st., 1900

Prof. Branner, Vice-President,

Stanford University, California.

Dear Sir:-

In a conversation with Mr. Nash, a week ago, he informed me as to the stringent needs of the Library in regard to books. He seemed to think the Department of Economics was in great need of books which the Library deplorably lacks.

Having very great confidence in Mr. Nash's judgment, and his interest in the wellfare of the University, I authorized him to inform Prof. Ross that there might be expended in his Department an extra $1,000.00 for the books which were absolutely necessary for that special Department.

I also, at the advice of Mr. Nash, authorized Mr. Nash as Librarian, to find out what books were much needed in the general miscellaneous collection, and authorized him to expend another $1,000.00 during the coming year, for the necessary books for this collection. I now think it proper to say to you that these expenditures will come under your supervision until the President is at his post again.

I will also write Mr. Nash that this has been mentioned to you. I wish you especially to see that the money, viz:- the $2,000.00 is
