GRAND HOTEL DES BAINS (Kurhaus) ST. MORITZ GRISONS --------

August 17th, /88

My very dear May Hopkins

I have had several letters from Mr. Nash since his sojourn with you, and in each he tells me of the improvement and change in your dear one "growing in grace each day". You and your dear household have often been the subject of my thoughts and I always have a picture of a sweet happy house. Such a sight pleases even the angel world for there are not as many peaceful restful and exemplary houses as bids the inspection of the outside world without finding a skeleton, as there should be here on Earth. I feel so grateful to you for your kindness to Mr. Nash and I can assure you dear May to no one could you more worthely bestow kindness upon and no one more than he appreciates such attentions. We are feeling sad over the painful news that reached us yesterday of the passing from life here on earth of Mr. Charles Crocker, before we left New York last May, we knew of his severe illness, and feared a fatal result, but since then have constantly heard of an improved condition and the sudden termination of life here gave us a severe shock. I picture the distress of the family, their loss is irreparable

but there will come to dear Mrs. Crocker and to the children the after consolation that is sure to come to all who look for comfort from the Giver and Source of all our joys and blessings of life, the comforting thought, that God only separates them for a very short time they are fast journeying towards the same country, to be reunited never to suffer sickness and death again. It seems very sad to contemplate the changes that have occurred in the rail road association with which we have so long been connected, only Mr. Huntington and my husband left here of the original number. I pray to my Heavenly Father to make me submissive to "His Will" and so influence Mr. Stanford and myself that whatever cross He puts before us we will see it through the cross that Jesus bore for us and it will enable us to bear all bravely. there will be an end and then comes Joy peace and a closer walk with the loved ones gone before. I saw in the Cal papers that Tim had gone East and I hope his meeting with his mother was all his good heart could wish for. I saw Mrs. Searle the day before we sailed for Europe, but only for a few moments, as I found her lawyer and Mr. Stanford engaged with her. She expected to be in Cal this winter, and I am hopeing [sic]much from it. The old associations will I hope be revived, and your attentions and the sight of the dear baby, with the [manly cure?] course of Tim's life all are not for nought - be willing to bear and forbare, life never runs smoothly with anyone and you have much to be grateful for - ever your true friend Jane L. Stanford.

leader, friend and comforter I do not seek for new friends now, but I treasure many of the past, but none more than you. I shall try and fix upon an evening while I am in the City while Mr. Stanford is at Vina for you to come to see me.

Remember me most kindly to your precious child. With love ever from Jane L. Stanford

Mrs. Cooper

My very dear and highly prized friend

Don't think for a moment that I have not appreciated your dear letters and your efforts to find me at home. We have remained at our City home but one night. All our thoughts and all our time that could be taken from dentistry and office work has been given to work that demanded our immediate attention here. I fear it will seem like a dream that we have been

here. I thought until a few days ago that we might remain here until the last week in December, but now it has been decided by Mr. Stanford to be in Washington when the Senate Convenes.

There is so much I wanted to talk about with you. There is no one aside from my sister I was more desireous[sic] to meet, and I do not yet give up the hope of having an hour or two with you. I have watched with interest your wonderful amount of work in schools, Bible Class, Associated Charities,

[right page] and in fact all the good work going on in the state. What a wealth of imperishable riches you will find awaiting you in the next sphere of life. You will yourself be surprised at the record that will be read to you of good works, kind words, gentle deeds of kindness. I resolved some few weeks ago to try and do something if only one thing, each day in Jesus name. And I find how fast the days glide by and with good intentions they go without a record of one act. I think of you so many very many times and I thank the dear Father you came into my life, as a teacher a helper

Dear Mrs Cooper

I have this day instructed Mr Towne to send you and your daughter passes over the different Rail Road in Cal that you may go on little trips to rest yourselves physically and mentally. Hoping you will avail yourselves of the opportunity.

With love yours Jane L. Stanford Nov 28th/88 S. F.
