I was eager to hasten away
and still would have left [ ?]
but this filth of the city
its mass of inhabitants so
different from us in all their
customs made me feel
it would be well to heed
the advice given me by
Dr Valerie of this place and
not stay there too many were
here in Rome sick of Typhoid
fever contracted this - so
we cheerfully went on to
this little quaint village
of C- our Hotel was pitched
high on the mountainside
it took us half an hour
three horses abreast before
our cairage[sic] half way up
a little Donkey was added
with a box astride which
amused us -The horses
were rigged out with bells
and fancy brass trappings

as we entered the court yard The marquee -
Hotel boys - Porters were all out as we had
been announced by the ringing of a bell at
the Concierge as we exited the gate way
we were received with all the bows and [smiles ?]
given to royalty - our rooms ready fire flowers
on the table and I was surprised at the [fixtures?]
and even luxury of the Hotel - our rooms
were really sumptious - The Manager could speak
a little English so I questioned about the
House - He said it had been built one hundred
years ago by one of the Bourbon Princes but
abandoned and now owned by a company -
same for his black sour bread and strong
