Prof. John E. Matzki,

Stanford University, Cal.

Dear Sir:-

Your communication of March 5th with check enclosed for $25. rent Feb. 1902 received. You will find enclosed receipt for above amount.

I note what you say that you would like me to instruct those in charge of the water system on the Campus, to notify you whenever it is necessary to shut off the water for any length of time. This is the first information I had that the water was shut off. I was informed however that there was a break in the main pipe line and that no water was to be had until same was repaired. There are others who were just as much incovenienced as yourself, but accidents of this kind cannot be anticipated.

Hoping this explanation will be satisfactory, I remain

Yours respectfully,

Chas. G. Lathrop

I am very much impressed by the photograph of Dr. Campbell. He seems to have a very

strong personality. I have read his sermon which you enclosed with great interest. At the same time, I think we cannot be too careful in making a selection for so important a place as the pulpit of the Stanford University Church. I intend to be very deliberate, and hope and pray that I will not make another mistake.

All that you have sent me concerning Rev. R. J. Campbell has been intensely interesting.

I am very sorry indeed not to have had the pleasure of meeting you. You called on me Fourth of July evening, but I was up at my brother's.

It will be a week tomorrow since I returned from Del Monte, and every day have expected you would drop in upon me. I miss your visits very much.

I hope that Mrs. Jordan is gaining her strength, and

to have it done without any ado of any kind. I prefer to do what is to be done in a quiet, unpretentious, unsatorial manner. I have often wished that I could by a thought - raise up the buildings as a mushroom growsin one night. One of the pleasures of adding to and beautifying the buildings is to do it without the blowing of trumpets, and surprise the students by an added gem here and there which will complete the whole in symmetry and perfection as my husband intended. I was very sorry indeed to notice in a little article in our local paper that in your address the allusion was
