Letters of Condolence on death of Jane Stanford, 1905

By the sad death of MRS. JANE LATHROP STANFORD has come to the

STANFORD CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO

a sorrow that is shared with the innumerable people who thus have lost a noble and beloved friend.

To some of us it was given to know both founders of the university, to join with them in the beginnings of the monument to their son, and, in the season of her second great affliction, to add our tribute of loving sympathy with the surviving founder. To most of us, she has been the chief source of the University, and the great object of its loyal affection.

During the years we were undergraduates she has dwelt among us, linking our loyalty more closely to herself and to

STANFORD UNIVERSITY.

She has sweetened our lives with many happy college memories, the influence of her devoted purpose shall remain with us and as an inspiration of lasting good.

The Mausoleum.

The great, white cushion has been slipped away, The marble lid has closed upon its own; Has closed upon the third eternal couch, And gives the chamber up to Death alone.

No more will students, with the footstep hushed, Approach the entrance of this sombre room And feel that suggestion yet of life - That final link between us and the tomb.

No more the Sphinxes will appear to wait, To watch expectant for the wanderer; That look has vanished from the carven eyes, And they will gaze beyond the mystic blur.

For She is dead, for She indeed is dead; The grated door has closed upon its own; Has closed upon all hint of life, and gives The Mausoleum up to death alone.
