Dear Dr. Jordan:-

We have learned of the death of Mrs. Stanford with the greatest sorrow, and we extend our greatest sympathy to you as the representative of our noble benefactress.

From her visit to Japan we have learned to know her from the personal side, and we mourn her loss as a personal friend. So the beneficiaries of her philanthropy we mourn her loss [insert: the] more keenly, and regret that she could not have been spared to see the still further growth of the university.
