My Dear Mr. Brown:
Will you pardon me if I venture what may be a
superfluous suggestion about the address that you are to give
at Mrs. Stanford's funeral at the Mausoleum next Friday? I
am anxious to make sure that none of the Clergymen officiat-
ing in the Services should make reference to the manner of
Mrs. Stanford's death. The newspapers have invested the
matter with circumstances of horror, but the grave doubts
and almost certainty about these stories make it quite clear
that we should treat the death as not having these unusual
circumstances. Once again I hope you will pardon me if I
have rashly called to your attention a matter that you are
already quite clear about.
Then, may I say one additional thing. We hope that all
the Clergymen will arrive early, and come to the vestry of the
Church in time to be fully ready to receive the funeral party
when it comes to the Church. Therefore it would be better
for you to take either the 10.30 train or the 11 o'clock spec-
ial from 3rd and Townsend. You will be met at the station
by carriages.
