First Methodist Episcopal Church Fourteenth and Clay Streets Oakland, Calif. March 17, 1905. F. N. Halliday, S. S. Supt. Elbert R. Dille, D. D. Pastor G. A. Clark, Secretary: Dear Sir:- I shall come down to Palo Alto on Sunday morning - cannot get away the evening before. I believe the train leaving S. F. at 9 A.M. reaches Palo Alto at 10.10 which I suppose is in time, and there will be a conveyance going over to the Chapel. It is an impressive occasion to me; it was my privilege to speak at the second Sunday service ever held at the University, and to have been the guest of the Senator and Mrs. Stanford then and at other times. I shall hope to attend the funeral services, which I understand are to be on Friday afternoon the 24th inst. Yours faithfully, E. R. Dille

322 22nd St. Oakland, Cal. March 18 '05. My dear Dr. Branner:- I have your note of the 17th and in reply would say that I shall count it a privilege to be present at the funeral services for Mrs Stanford next Friday and to take any part which may be assigned me in the service. Would you be kind enough to ask Prof. Duniway to notify me as to what is expected of me. He could see me on Monday next at the Chapel any time between one o'clock and 2:30 - I am there giving my lecture on Ethics at that time. Very truly yours, Chas R Brown

San Jose. March 18th, 1905. Dr. J. C. Branner. Acting President, Stanford University. Dear Sir:- I have your letter of yesterday inviting me to preach the sermon at the funeral of Mrs. Stanford next Friday. I appreciate the honor thus done me, and also the serious responsibility put upon me thereby. I well understand that the words spoken on such an occasion must be sober, judicous and discreet words. I am willing to undertake the office, and perform it to the best of my ability. It occurs to me that I ought beforehand to have a brief conference with you, or those in charge of the ceremonies, and therefore I shall go to Stanford on Monday next, reaching there probably at about 10 A.M. If convenient to you, I should much like to have a brief interview with you at such hour and place as may suit your convenience. If more convenient to you, I could just as well go up later in the day, or in the afternoon. You can communicate with me here by telephone, if you desire to do so. My number is, Blue 1772. On reflection, perhaps it will be better for me to go up in the afternoon. But I shall be governed by your convenience. Very respectfully yours. John W. Dinsmore
