Our recollections of you all are most pleasant - I have done what I could here to plead the cause of the Pacific Rail Road. Perhaps Mr. Schlarbaum may find some occupation in your part of the line. My dear Gov. Stanford,

I am resolved to keep you in mind of my existence, and to assume that your memory retains traces of your old kindness towards a friend of six years ago! Will you allow me to ask your kind consideration and that of Mrs. Stanford, for Miss Le Clercq, who is on a professional tour to your city? You know I am an open friend of

the Drama, especially of all who adorn its dangerous profession, with purity of character, as well as artistic skill. Miss Le Clercq is held in high esteem among the ladies and gentlemen of Boston and New York, and I know by experience how charming her society is. Pray commend me to Mrs. Stanford and her sister, and do not come Eastward without letting me see you - for I always hold you in special recollection. Yours very truly Henry W. Bellows

32 Flood Building. San Francisco, May 31, 1893.

Hon. Leland Stanford,

Palo Alto, Cal.

My Dear Sir:-

The bearer, Albert Scheer, has just arrived here from New York, and comes with letters of introduction to me recommending him very highly as a man educated for the care and management of fine stock. He took a regular course of education in the vetrinary schools of France before coming to this country and was employed by Mr. Wm. K. Vanderbildt of New York in the care of fine stock purchased by him in France and brought to this country.

Mr. Scheer speaks some two or three languages and seems to be a man unusually qualified for his calling in life. His wife is with him and has been in the employ of my daughter's family in New York as cook, in which line she is unquestionably superb. Taking the two together it seemed to me that they might be very desirable in some establishment having fine stock and also needing the services of a good cook.

They are entire strangers here, and coming so highly recommended to me, I have taken the liberty of giving them this letter of introduction to you, thinking possibly they might be of service to you in your country home.

I am, my dear sir, Very sincerely yours,

L.B. Benchley
