Hon Leland Stanford Dear Sir I have been much interested in what I have heard of the "Leland Stanford Jr University" and being desirous of going to the Pacific Coast to practice my profession of Surveyor and Landscape Architect, I respectfully request that I may be given a position in connection with it if agreeable to your wishes and all things should prove satisfactory. I should prefer to act as superintendent of the ornamental

grounds and gardens as I have always made an especial study of things pertaining to them, but I should be more willing to undertake any other duties that may be assigned me. I have paid particular attention to the artistic principles that should govern work of this kind as well as the practical care and treatment of trees, shrubs and plants with which I have been uniformly successful. I have made a critical examination of nearly all the parks and pleasure grounds in this country and wish to take a trip abrosd for the same purpose if an opportunity ever presents itself. I cannot but feel that my acquaintance with Mr. Olmstead, Mr.[Parsons?] and other men eminent in their profession have been of great benefit to me and I can rely upon their advice and assistance whenever I desire it. I have had a long experience in doing the best [class?] of [goot?] work and few men in the country are more familiar with the [planetable?] and its use. I am heartily sick of the government service as I have found it and always prefer other work when I can get it. I am accustomed to directing laborers and others and succeed in keeping good discipline and achieving always a fair amount of work. I shall be pleased to furnish you with the fullest information in regard to myself and come

San Francisco 9/29/87 Hon Leland Stanford, Dear Sir: While in Japan I made the selection and classification of the Japanese Curios for your son's museum and would call your attention to a magnificent bronze centerpiece pronounced by experts to be the finest bronze ever made in Japan. It would be very appropriate for the center of a museum, Art Gallery or large hall. I have opened the Bronze at room 22; 220 Sutter St. for the inspection of only three or four people before taking it to Boston. If Mrs. Stanford and yourself would appoint a time to look at it I would be pleased to show it. Yours Respectfully Fred H. [Deukin?] [Deukim?] Bros. & Co. Yokohama Japan
