June 12, 1887 Hon Leland Stanford Dear Sir, Desiring some information in regard to the University which you have founded in California, I address you this letter for that purpose. Over two years ago I left my home in California and came East for the purpose of securing [an?] education. The first year that I was here I spent in making preparation to enter the Rose Polytechnic. On the 23rd of this month I shall have completed the studies of the Freshman year. When I came here I expected to finish my course here but I was unable to obtain the necessary money to do this, consequently I shall have to remain out of school next year. I have a boy 16 years old the 16th of last May that I would like if possible to get ino the [Stanford Jr.?] University school when it opens but don't know what to do to get him this [?] [the lines?]. Will you please infor me if possible he has always been [an a rank?] and has had very little schooling living in the foothills there is not much [chance?] for a boy to advance very far. Boston, Mass., July 9th, 1889

Hon Leland Stanford, Dear Sir We respectfully propose to have the quadrangle in the Leland Stanford Jr University for the sum of $3.18 per square yard. This includes all the blocks and labor necessary, you to pay the freights from here to buildings, also furnish all necessary sand and cement; and the grounds of the quadrangle to be graded to the proper depth to receive the blocks; also all teaming, carting and such. The blocks will weigh 360 pounds per square yard. Freight at present time by vessel is $2.25 per sq.yd, by rail $4.00 per sq.yd. We guarantee to have it completed by the first of next May, provided this is accepted in a reasonable length of time. Or we will furnish Two Paving
