Cal" Dear Sir: Having recently seen a paragraph in one of our Texas papers relating to your benevolent enterprise (Of endowing a College for poor boys) I decided upon the [Quixotic?] project of writing to you; and trusting to your goodness of heart to excuse my unconventional venture. Having [essayed?] [therefore?] I scarcely know how to proceed further in order to introduce myself and state clearly and concisely the object of my thus addressing you. first-line of Steamers upon the Ohio. [In?] [?] 1837 the [firm?] failed and my Grand Parents came to Texas. My father at that period had graduated at Belgium and also at Paris, France as a linguist and a lawyer and after three years traveel over the continent of Europe he joined his parents in Texas and began the practice of Law. My grand father assigned all of his property and assets to his creditors and corrected all the personal estate of his wife into Texas Bounty [warrent?] and [H.R.?] [Certificate?]. Being an honest man and having the entire confidence of the citizens of Cincinnati he [negotiated?] a private loan for the Republic of Texas of several hundred thousand dollars. In this loan my grandfather was the sole agent of the creditor's of the

course of five or ten years but in that time it will be too late to educate my son. I do not wish to enter my son as a charity pupil, but I wish to render a fair and just equivalent for the great kindness you will extend by accepting my proposition. I know of no Texas or of any northern college where I can enter him for [lands?] or any terms except a cash basis.
