Dear Father & Mother

Your letter of the 4th April last came to hand by the last steamer mail. I was glad to hear that you were all well. I had hoped our affairs here would be in such condition that I could make you a visit this Spring and attend the Republican Convention. But such is not the case. It would not have been prudent for me to leave. My businss is in good comfortable condition but I have to aid the San Francisco house as mutch [sic] as possible. The boys have nearly $10,000 from me every steamer above what is necessary to pay my own Bills. I could make this Store do mutch [sic] better had I not to use funds for the aid of the Boys. Every dollar I can spare from this business goes to aid them.

I am in hope that by another year they will be in mutch easier circumstances.

I think you have used $3500.00 in all from me since you wrote you would send that amt $1500.00 on acct of J W N & $2000.00 on acct of D. C. S.

I would have liked mutch to have been home and cast the first vote in convention for Mr Seward. As I would have done if there - California being the first State to vote.

If the Charlston Convention does not nominate Douglas and the Chicago Convention nominates most any but Fremont we shall poll a good Republican vote in this State.

We are having a fine rain to day. The country is looking finely. Barley will be fit to cut about the 20th of this month. What about the 15th June

The prospects now is that we shall have a wonderfully fruitful season

Dear Father & Mother

Enclosed find D O Mills & Co Draft No 15432 on the American Exchange Bank N.york and payable to the order of Josiah Stanford, for the sum of one thousand dollars. I have delayed writing for some time in order that it might be convenient to remit the enclosed. It is on acct of [?] Stanford. We are all quite well and business is fair. I have not time now to write mutch, but if I had more time I do not know that I could write mutch that would interest. I wish you were settled in this country and I hope the time will come when you will be. I believe it would be better for all. I shall write you more fully upon this subject some other time

Your affectionate son
