My Dear Jennie

By the date
of this you will observe
it is written on your
birthday. I wish you a
goodly number more in
this life and that the
years as they pass may be
happy and useful ones

I have felt very lonesome
since you have been gone
and this morning when
I wakened had you been
nearer I would have
gone to you but I feel I must
be in the City to morrow.

I was much pleased to
receive your dispatch say-
ing you thought your sur-
roundings were better than
I expected and I am sure
they must be or Gen Houghton
and Mr Hookes would not stay there
