I am glad to learn that you have held your entrance examinations with greater strictness. For the general good I think our University ought to be of a high grade of education while the state schools should be a character to fit students for advanced studies. If the State schools are what they ought to be they will afford the cheapest possible education on the student can live at home during his attendance at school.
We have engaged passage from Liverpool for October 5th and that will be too late for any consultation with you in regard in extended accommodations. I very much regret that there should not be dormitory accommodations for all the young ladies who desire to attend the University but it is only a question of time when I will erect the contemplated dormitory for the girls according to the original plan. I am glad you are so hopeful for the coming year.

My Dear Doctor
I have your letter of August 8th and [notice?] particularly what you say about Mr Doyle sending a check for $150 as a compensation for his sons tuition.
It is very kind and considerate in Mr Doyle to donate this money but I do not think we ought to accept it as compensation for tuition. Our idea is -if you remember- that while the Institution is to be open to all without regard to their fortunes nothing must occur that might humiliate students of small means. I want the students to feel not only that the institution is free but that they have a right to avoid themselves of it.
IF a gentleman like Mr. Doyle chooses to make a donation to the Library or any other Department by which the students hall be benefited we ought to accept the donation with gratitude but I do not want it to

be as compensation for tuition. I think that if you explain my views to Mr. Doyle he will recognize the propriety of not allowing his generosity the affect in any manner the poorer students.
I am glad that you enclosed me a copy of President Whites letter in regard to board. I feel confident that our present system may be very much improved. It seems to me that so far as mere board is considered we ought to be able to furnish a good table with fair variety at $3 or even less per week. But I think if we allow the students to board themselves they will be better satisfied and we shall be relieved entirely of trouble. On my return to California we will give the matter careful consideration.
