I see in the papers that Professor Swaine is about to leave us. I am sorry for this as I have an impression that he is especially suited to act with you as your assistant in your duties as President. If you approve I would be willing to offer him the position of Vice President or Assistant to the President. For some time I have been thinking that on my return to California I would consult with you in regard to an assistant and the title be ought to receive. It seems to me that whoever represents

The probability are that we shall be able to have Washington sometime during the coming week as I think the Senate will adjourn about that time.
