My dear Doctor
Without answering in detail your letters in regard to the board of students I want to say that we do not charge anything for room rent and only what is necessarily paid out for students accommodation board attendance and lights in other words we give them rooms and tuition free. Everything else we expect the student to pay for but it seems to me that if proper economy is practiced $5 a week ought to pay all expenses. The actual

cost of the food to each student ought not to exceed $2 or $2.50.
I have an idea that the expense for attendance is unnecessarily large. I want economy to the practised both for the benefit of the students finances and as an example to them.
I shall write to Mr Lathrop to see if it is not possible to reduce the expenses.
Yours Very Truly

Dear Doctor:
The bearer of this letter is Wilson Evan a son of the late General Evans of Cal. He has been in my office as page for some years and is now getting town age when he ought to have an opportunity to improve his education which he cannot well have in my office. I take a great deal of interest in him and I wish you would examine him sufficiently to tell him what is necessary for him to do in order to prepare himself for admission as a student in the university.
Yours very truly
Leland Stanford
