We have reached Vienna safely, having passed a pleasant day at Bern and one at Zurich since our parting from you at Geneva. We crossed the Austrian frontier just 24 hours before the "fumigation" of all Travellers coming into the Empire, was

began, and we were of course, pleased to have escaped the steaming. So far the cholera has been kept out of Austria by the great precautions taken by this government.
We all hope that you and Mrs Stanford reached Aix entirely well and that you have derived great benefit from the baths. We trust that Mrs Stanford will not have a return of her

indisposition and that you both will escape the cholera epidemic which seems to be lurking about.
Our children are quite wild with delight over the magnificent gifts which you and Mrs Stanford gave them and which they will treasure all their lives with greatest pride. Julia's watch shows beautifully and our son Ulysses has taken his out of his pocket, it seems
