Mr Laughlin has arranged so that "balance" note for 18,500 (about) shall go to [Siming?] and [Lenny?] takes Mr Laughlins note 18 months with our endorsements for the balance of his claim, we to hold the lands, less 20000 acres & 30 sections as security. In relation to the 1st mortgage bonds that Mr Huntington wrote about as having been used for the purchase of Stock, there were 210 used. What R Stock Park had [Mc?] accounts for the Bonds used in the purchase at par in currency. I will find out about Dorsey I know there was such a man arround Virginia.

I was expecting to go up to day but from the Judge's letter I presume it not to be necessary.

Your favor of the 11th inst is received and the matter of copyright in the name of Gov. Stanford is being attended to. We write today to Gov Stanford asking him for his guaranty to hold us [h?] as against Maybridgefor any claims he may have. Gov S. has already telegraphed us to the effect that he would indemnify us

know anything of the sale of the book except from you and that has not been much. I expected a reporta report from you on the 1st of June according to the agreement made with Mr osgood as the book was announced for sale in the papers on the 28th of February. So far as responsibility is concerned for the sale of the book, I am quite sure it cannot be placed on me so far as it has not been placed on the market in California. The terms on which it was placed in your hands for sale were gone over. I received your letter accompanied with Bancroft's and answered it sending the answer to Gov. Stanford for his approval with a request to forward it to you. It seemed too late in the day to advance the price of the book and as to giving

Mr Bancroft the exclusive sale I did not approve and it seemed a great imposition to Mr Stanford to reduce the price to him, but as the case now stands on your statement of the slow sales, and the chief expense of a second edition being incurred I would advise that the reduction which you recommend in your last letter be made to $6.00. I was informed when in San Francisco that Gov Stanford had rec'd two boxes of books to be distributed as presents. The volume intended for the Prince of Wales was to have been accompanied with a note. As the Governor has now returned to California I will write him about it and send you the note of [recommendation]

Dear Sirs Yours of Jan 4th came to hand in due [?]. I have read a letter from Gov. Stanford in reference to the matter in dispute between us in which he expresses a decided indisposition to be troubled with it, but he does not indicate what he would have me do, and I am not disposed to assume any responsibility that is not necessary. I shall write to him again to day I do not believe that I have authority to pay for that paper and as further evidence it is only necessary to refer to the date of the announcement of the book on the 12th of Sept 1881 where the number of plates the book was expected to contain is stated and then refer to the date of the order given by Mr Edwards on Rice Kendall & Co.

I am reluctant to be called east again as it would be attended with great damage to my own business interests, and I want to settle the dispute with out it if I can. If the Governor gives me authority to do it so that it shall be final as between you and me and between the Governor & me, time will be saved by information from you as to the allowance that will be made for the paper and it be taken in stock by the Heliotype Company?

As to the disposition of the unsold copies of

the book, I must wait also for instructions.

That the Governor has not given any more copies is perhaps chargable to me, as I advised delay until such time as sales fell off, as there is always time enough to give them away. I have advised that he should give copies to all public libraries in the country; to this he has made no reply. I am aware that he is overcharged with mighty business matters and he dont want to be taxed any more for the book. He may give me authority to do this for him but as yet I have no such authority. I shall send your reports to him to day for his inspection.

If he gives me authority to give the book away in his name I will furnish a list to you.
