The vigil of the night is surely past The glorious morning dawn is here at last Ah! it is the day on which shall be fulfilled The grand fruition noble souls have willed From all the county round the gather here

This Temple unto every heart is dear And who can tell the magnitude of calls Which ne'er had been but for its walls classic That down the ages Clarion notes will send Which in their power for good will have no end

Oh may appreciation swell the souls of all who by their presence here condoles It may the parents hear the words "Well done" The honor of their will beloved son.

To

The Hon. Leland Stanford and Mrs. Stanford

Written for the Occasion of

The dedication of

The Leland Stanford Junior University.

That joy of joy was [thame?] a child unspoiled unselfish gay Whose heart was as the heart of morm While yet the time is may Untouched by fear of summer heat or dread of wintery day.

And thime that dearest joy of joys So few are given to see A youth whose soul a crystal fount Serene unsullied free. Mirrored the heaven aspiring heights Of a grand maturity

But not when mountain peaks of power His eager eye may lure;

Or [syloan?] shadows tempt his feet from paths serene and pure;

Where sorrows storm assails and clouds of doubt his vary obscure;

Not here where foes in ambush lurk or madly rage amaire

And every hour of victory is but an hour of pain

Not here shall thy flesh child his grand maturity attain

Today; mid scenes surpassing fear of this our Promised Land

While Happy Youth and childhood meet In glad expectance stand

He dedicated the noble work His loving wisdom planned.

Thy swiftly Angel messengers! to Paradise away!

To leland Stanford Jurnior ours Glad message thus convey;

"The work which then didst plan to do "is here began today.

"We see in living rock expressed "Thy noble gracious thought; We hear the plandits of the world For whom thy love hath wrought; "And coming ages we behold "With this thy largest frought."
