March 12, 1946.

Dear Mother,

Well it looks as though you may be having a visitor sometime in the next two months or so. Bob keeps telling me, or has at least said so several times lately that he is going down to Los Angeles to see Mrs. Lesnett. He has not mentioned the least interest in seeing me and I think he even plans to come sometime when I'm not there. He won't tell me when he is going to come because he says he isn't coming down to see me, he is coming down to see Mrs. Lesnett and therefore there is no reason why I should know anything about it. He says that he thinks you are the only friends he has in the Lesnett family; so

don't be surprised if he comes down to see you sometime soon.

I have been thinking over this little party, and even though Ruth's birthday is on Sunday I think it might be better to have it on Monday. I think it might be the most convenient for both you and the girls. It's awfully nice of you to say I can have it, I hope it won't be too much trouble for you. I really don't want a very elaborate dinner - I think maybe a frozen jello salad, some kind of a casserole, or creamed chicken or rice or something like that, and a vegetable, and some of your divine rolls. About the cake, the white one with red roses would be the nicest because those are Stanford colors. Also, I don't think this

would be an appropriate time to have Alice and Annette because they are more or less out of the group and would probably feel a little [shy?]. Also Mary Ellen won't be down for this vacation because she is going skiing. Besides I really think the fewer I had the better, because I want to make it the least trouble for you that I can. I also think it might be better to do it on Monday because Ruth just told me specifically not to tell you it was her birthday because she was afriad you would try and put yourself out too much, and if we had it on Monday, then she wouldn't be se suspecting.

Also on Monday night the girls might all want to do something together afterwards. Please let me know which day

you would like best; so that I can ask the girls. Ruth is so afraid that she is going to be a lot of trouble for you. I certainly hope that we won't be.

The cup and saucer came for Sally and it is just precious. She thought so too and was very pleased with it. Thank you so very much for going to all the trouble of getting it for me; I appreciate it very much. I'm sure I could never have found any thing as cute.

I know you will be pleased to hear that I feel as though I have practically no shopping to do for spring. I found some things up here that I hope you will approve of. I got a brown and white checked skirt, a beige, short-sleeved cashmere sweater, and a white spring dress for school that has red and black lines

going through it. It's very plain and spart looking, and I didn't think very expensive for the skirt. All I want to get at home, if I can, is a beige skirt to go with my sweater, a cotton dress, a pair of nice black shoes, and a bathing suit, and a girdle. I hope you didn't mind my buying these things but the sweater was the only cashmere I've seen in a long time and it is exceptionally soft. I know that you will approve of the dress.

Thank you again for getting the cup and saucer for Sally and for letting me have Ruth down for spring vacation.

With much love, Mary
