Dear Mother and Daddy,

The trip back went very well. We finally got started about eleven-thirty, after having had to get a couple of tires changed. Bob and I got along very well, in fact he called the next day to ask me to go to the symphony, but I had to tell him I was already going. I don't imagine I shall hear from him now until way after Christmas, if even then. We got back to Palo Alto about eight o'clock and had dinner here. The whole trip back was very gay.

I had another music lesson on Tuesday, which wasn't as good as the others because I hadn't had time to practice as much, but nevertheless it was quite good. Dr. Popper told me that he thought I had accomplished quite a bit and seems very interested in my work. He said he wished that I could find more time to concentrate on it, and I am going to try and do so. He also talked as if he expected

me to get a program prepared so that I could play somewhere.

Last night we had our Christmas party. Everyone drew a name and got a present and wrote a poem for that person. I got terribly inspired and made a surrealistic portrait of this person in a box. I had Jean [Crowel?], and arranged some glasses, a [braid?] and somethings that were sort of typical of her. It was different from any of the others. I got an awfully cute poem and a bow and two arrows, supposedly on for Art and another for Jack. I was lucky, because mine was flattering and some of them were sort of nasty. The hashers all ate dinner with us and the sophomores had to do the hashing and dish washing. They also had to prepare a skit for the rest of us. It was awfully funny. We had a Christmas tree in the living room and all our presents, Mrs. Reynolds' presents, and the hashers' presents were all there, and the house President handed them out and read all the poems one by one.

The rest of the time I have been spending in studying. I have succeeded in getting about a hundred and fifty pages of Economics learned (I hope) and quite a bit of history.

Love to all, Mary
