Dear Mother and Daddy,

We had a very nice drive back yesterday, and arrived here about four-thirty or five. The sandwiches and apples were just wonderful, the only trouble with them being that there wasn't more of them. We did stop and have something else along with them in Paso Robles. We were all completely tired when we arrived, and the first thing I did when I came in was to take a nice long shower. I just got settled last night and then slept until almost lunch today. The L's had to register at one; so I went down about twelve thirty to stand in line. I didn't have much trouble getting registered. I got my grades and was really very pleased. I went plus sixteen which is quite good. I got a B in history, a B in law, and an A in French.

I got my program for this quarter worked out quite well. I am taking the last part of my American history which deals with American history from eighteen ninety to the present. I am also taking Economics two, which is just a continuation of the Economics course that I took last fall. I wanted to take some more advanced Economics courses but found I couldn't until I had this; but I will be able to next fall. Then I am going to take typing to improve it, and besides it might help in case I got a job where I had to type this summer. I also decided to take a course in religion which is given by a man named Spieglberg, who is supposed to be very good. I would have taken a course in just the Bible, but they weren't offering one this quarter, but there will be quite a bit about it in this course.

I must go and get ready for dinner now. Thank you very much for sending the lunch yesterday, it was certainly appreciated by everyone. Also if you would wirte me Anna's last name I will send her an Easter card.

Love to all. Mary

Dear Mother and Daddy,

One week of school has passed and I have just gotten everything down to a system again. All of my classes have started out to be very interesting, except Economics which I havn't done much about as yet, and of course you can't exactly call typing an interesting class. But my history professor seems to be a very interesting person, and an interesting lecturer. I am awfully glad that I decided to that comparative religion course. So many people wanted to take his class that they couldn't conduct it in a regular class room, but had to move it to the Educational Auditorium. But even though the class is so big, you have never heard such a quiet place, no one hardly dares move. I think you would really be quite amazed at the attitude.

The weather since I have gotten back has been just terrible, in fact it has rained a lot. I was going to go to the beach last Tuesday, but it was just too cold. So on Tuesday afternoon I went to the horse races with Jack and Virginia Walker and Ralph Ashton. I didn't bet anything, but we got a racing form and tried to figure out which the winners would be, and of all the four races we saw, we picked a winner every time. I really started going to classes on Wednesday. I was the only one on the third floor that was brave enough to take five eight o'clock classes; so I have to get up every morning early and wake everyone else up. I find it a rather unpleasant job, because I got used to staying in bed till the last minute I could. Of course that meant that I would have to run to class every morning instead of getting there lesiurely and in pleanty of time.

Wednesday night I had a date with Art. His parents were in San Francisco and had lent him their car while they were there. He had to take it back up to them on Wednesday night and insisted that I go along. I really wasn't too anxious, but I went anyway, and not only met all he Mathewses but also an Aunt and Uncle. Of course there were all just as nice as they could be, but entirely different from the Carpenters. They were all awfully funny and were continually telling some tall tale. Mr. Mathews embarassed me to death by asking me continually if Art had a good line. Luckily Art would make some remark before I'd have a chance to answer. Mr. Mathews has a face that look sort of like Daddy's, but he is a very large man. The whole family harly thought enough of Art, they just sat around in a circle and looked at him as if he were a God or something. For quite a large part of the evening Art had to go and have private little talks with each of his parents, and there I was having to talk to the rest of the family. It was much worse than anything I had to go through at Jacks' house, but they were all very easy to talk to; so it really wasn't bad at all. Nevertheless I think that I like Jack's family the best.

Thursday I went shopping, which I guess I really shouldn't have done in view of all the lovely things that I got while I was at home, but all I wanted to get for myself was a pair of low heeled white shoes that could be worn with stockings, like the little red ones that I had. I couldn't exactly wear the red ones with everything, and I had to keep borrowing Eve's and Illie's; so I got a pair for myself. I know you will like them because they are just like Margie's little brown ones that Daddy got her last fall in San Francisco. The other things I bought was a cashmere sweater for Margie's birthday. I promised myself last Christmas that I would get her one, because

she got me that lovely red one that she could have gotten for herself, and I know she was hoping that I would give her one. Besides she was so sweet this last vacation about letting me wear her clothes and giving me her navy blue shoes that I just had to get her one. But I can assure you that will be the extend of my shopping for the quarter.

Last night I went out with Jack. We went to a little place that is just out in back of the campus which is sort of a Friday night meeting place for the Stanford crowd and especially the Delts, in fact the Delts had practically taken over the place last night, and everyone had so much fun dancing around with everyone. Kay was with Bud again so maybe that combination isn't as hopeless as we once thought it was. I am also going out with Jack tonight, but I don't exactly know where as yet, but some place close by. We will probably go with George Grimes and Jan McDonnough.

I keep wishing that I was going to be home tomorrow. It seem sort of funny that I won't be there on Easter Sunday, and also rather disappointing. I know that the grey dress will look wonderful, and I wish I were there to see it. I also wish I could be there when all the guests come in. I sent Anna's card yesterday as soon as I got your letter with her last name. I'm sure it will get there in time, since I sent it Special Delivery. I'm afraid I couldn't think of much to put on it in Spanish.

I hate to keep starting asking you to do things for me, but I have run out of checks. I really don't need money now for much of anything but I do have to pay my room and board bill by the fifteenth, and I would appreciate it you could send me one by then.

Love to all, Mary
