of junior hostesses at the various functions, and that we could definitely help register the delegates on the first day of the conference. Of course none of it was at all definite, for they might not need us, but she said we would at least help register the delegates. It would certainly be a wonderful opportunity to meet some very interesting people. I'd have to try and learn a little French this summer so that I could at least tell what was going on even though I couldn't expect to say anything to them. Nevertheless I would keep my ears and eyes wide open. She also sent sort of a list of what kind of clothes I should bring for the weather and what I would probably be doing. From the tone of the letter to Ruth it sounded as if she were very pleased at the thought of my coming. Ruth has a job consulting at a camp in Washington near Spokane which lasts until

was much better. She sang Clair de Lune and we practiced every day after lunch and dinner for about three weeks; so to miss coming in first just because of what we wore was just a little maddening; however, it was nice that we did come in second.

Yesterday was quite a day of social affairs. There was a Delt swimming party in the afternoon at this Maxwell Jasen's house in Atherton. It was lots of fun especially since a lot of girls that I knew well were there including Kay and Illie. We went out about three and spent a very active afternoon; I don't think I sat down until five: thirty - we went swimming and played tennis and with some heavy medicine balls (I think that is what they are called) that were so heavy they practically knocked you over every time you caught one. After that we all went to the Delt house for dinner where we had

a tremendous meal, and then we went to a dance that the Betas and the Delts gave. It was given outside, and consequently all the girls were supposed to wear pedal pushers or something similar, but I just absolutely refused to; so I stood out like a sore thumb in a skirt and sweater.

I think my economics test went just a little better this time. I went through my notes and reading carefully, and then I got ahold of some test questions and wrote out answers for them. Of course they didn't ask any of the questions that I studied, but still it was an awfully good way to study. I am now in the midst of doing typing lessons and reading some books for book reports. I have to hand in two next week and I just don't know how I'll ever get them done, but somehow they always do get finished. One is for my comparative religions course.

the twenty-first of August, which means that she would want to start home about the twenty-sixth or seventh of August. I would have to come up and meet her in San Francisco, and take the train with her from there. I do so hope that you'll find that things work out so that I can go. Every time I talk to Ruth about it, and it seems that we talk of little else, something more exciting than ever seems to come up. As long as I didn't leave until that late in August, I would have been home two and a half months. I will certainly do anything you want me to until then. It [illegible] saw Dr. Popper last Thursday he spoke again of my playing the Rhapsody in Blue with the orchestra; so I am definitely going to work on it for that purpose. I thought I might get Ness Dudley to help me; so that I wouldn't learn any mistakes into the piece. I think I could have it

mostly learned by that time. I'm thrilled to death at the thought of doing something like that. I only hope that I am capable of it.

Friday night we had the Spring Sing. It was really a wonderful afair. They had it out in the amphitheater and about six thousand people came. There were about twenty-six different groups competing. Some of them sang very well, and then there were some that weren't at all good. We came in second and got a perfectly hideous vase and a rather dilapidated box of fruit. We only missed coming in first by three points and it was very discouraging because we think we lost on the way we were dressed. We all had on yellow sweaters and grey skirts and the girls that came in first all wore black coats and white gloves and scarfs, and it really did look awfully good. But our song was much more original and our interpretation
