November 4

Dear Mother and Daddy,

I've just gotten back from San Francisco where I've been shopping all day with Sally. We were very successful. I got the formal I wanted and it was 35 dollars. I really didn't want to pay that much if I could help it, but I think it was worth it and I know you will be very pleased; so would you please put the money in the bank for it. I just payed for my train tickets home and I won't have enough money to cover it. Since I want it to be my only Christmas present, I think it will be alright.

The dress is exactly what I had in mind. It's pink and black, and extremely plain. I wanted to get something more standard because all my other formals have been very fussy and ruffly. The top is made of pink and black stripped satin and has a low waist, a sweetheart neck line,

and cap sleeves. The skirt is black chiffon. It looks awfully good on and as far as I could tell the material was much better than in any of the other formals I looked at. I know you'll be very pleased. It needs just a little altering in the shoulders and I wonder if you think I should have one of the girls pin it and send it home to be fixed or should I just pin it so it looks alright and then have it fixed right when I come home. I'd send it home now without question but I have to wear it two weeks from tonight and I don't know whether I could get it back in time. Please write me as soon as possible and tell me if you think you could get it back. I'd really rather have it fixed right now but I don't want to run the risk of not being able to wear it after I've gotten it.

You needn't worry about Mary Ellen's not having dates. George's roommate,

whom several girls would give almost anything to have him take them out, saw her in the library and wanted to take her out; so he found out what her name was and called her up and asked her out. His name is Dick Reinheart and is very good looking and extremely nice. He comes from a very good Piedmont family. We are double dating tonight. There are about three dances here on campus tonight and we are going to all three. It's getting time for them to come, so I'd better start getting ready.

I got Sally's and my train tickets today. We are coming home Wednesday night the 22nd and going back on the Daylight Sunday. I will certainly be glad to get home again.

I'm afraid this letter will be very boring to Daddy, but I'm going to the Cal. S.C. game two weeks from today and I'm sure that will be much more interesting

to him.

Please don't forget to put the money in the bank or I won't have any formal and tell me if you think you could get the dress back in time for the 18th if I sent it home to be fixed.

Love to all, Mary -
