January 12, 1945.
Dear Mother and Daddy,
Things have not ended so well as they begun. At the beginning of the week, everything was perfect, now everything is all confused. To tell you the truth, it's rather nice to have a confused social life, it's interesting to find out what's going to happen next, but as for classes, that's entirely a different matter. I have a Spanish class at nine in which the professor talks Spanish so fast I can't possibly understand him - Naturally he wouldn't think of keeping anything in English. At ten o'clock I have a French class in which the professor talks so softly you can't understand him either. It's confusing enough just between the two. At eleven o'clock I finally get to a class where they speak English, but that professor usually gets so disgusted with the class because they never say anything constructive so he just dismisses the class and tells to go home and do a little thinking. I might say that I am in rather a confused state.

My social life is awfully confused; only its so confused that its rather funny. I was supposed to go out with Bob this week-end. Then George asked me out but I couldn't go so he asked for the next week. Then Sally couldn't go this week-end and we were all going to San Francisco to see "The Blithe Spirit". So because I thought it would be so much more fun if we all went together, so I asked to change the date until the next week-end, which turned out not to be so good, since I had to break George's date. So I told George that I'd go out with him this week-end, which meant that I had to break the date with Bob. Only when I called Bob, I got so flustered that I didn't tell him why, so I think he's hurt. Of course he didn't say so, but I think he must from the way he acted. Anyway this is just like me to create such a situation.
Everyone around here has the bridge bug. We are always playing after lunch and dinner, they say that it is supposed to settle your brain

and that it is good for you, but I certainly can't see that it has done much for me. I'm playing now with Sally [Sutch], Ruth, and Joanne [Whittier]. I've just been writing this while I have been dumby.
In just a few minutes I have to go to my gym class. I'm taking gymnastics - why I don't know, but it just sounded intriguing. Ruth and I decided to take it together. She's real athletic though and will probably be able to do everything but I'll probably never be able even to stand on my head. If I do, I will consider it a real accomplishment. My biggest difficulty though is that I can't find any tennis shoes. Anyway, I'm off to climb a rope, just like the monkey I am.
