Tues 3-27-56

Dear Mother,

Life is rosy. I sent down to the machine shop yesterday to see if I could get my old job back but business was so slow that nobody had even bothered to come to work so as of now, I'm just a baby-sitter. This was a 2 band-aid day at the Singleton's. Pam stepped on a rose bush & bled just enough to scare herself silly & then a little while later her brother overturned his sand pail on the living-room floor, & when I found him he was having a ball. Ages 3 1/2 yrs. & 18 mo. respectively. I've sat for them every week since last summer & it's a ball. Pam later fell off her tricycle & [racked?] up a skinned knee. I spent this morning sitting by the pool. The 8 yr. old son of some friends of mine called up to see if I was home, so his dad brought him up to go swimming in the pool.

It's usually a fine apartment. The boys left it in a terrific mess, just plain cruddy. I spent the first two days mopping & scrubbing. In the kitchen, I began on the cupboards with soapy water, switched to Dutch Cleanser, but Brillo Pads really did the job. Ann, the girl who's staying with me, swept out the living-room, so now the place is in great shape. I even re-arranged the living-room

furniture. The boys won't even know the place, especially since I washed all their filthy rugs & towels.

Ann & her fiancee leave at 8 a.m. every morning. He picks her up & delivers her every nite around midnite. It's a great arrangement. I have the kitchen all to myself. The fellow who I used to cook dinner for at the house when his mother was out of town now comes up to the apt. & I cook for him up there. It isn't like when his mother cooks for us, but I'm learning. Tonite I had veal cutlets (Ritz crackers for lack of bread crumbs) & he was really great about eating them. He insists on potatoes & gravy & I'm finally beginning to get the hang of pan gravy. It's really neat, buying my own groceries. I eat tons of meat, bacon & eggs.

The swimming pool is right outside the door & down a flight of steps to the court, so if I can find time, I may even get a tan. John left a lot of Road & Track magazines around, so I've been eating those up. Tomorrow I'll begin writing my papers.

If you really do get me that subscription to Cycle magazine, you'll be well on your way to being a tolerant, grown-up, well-adjusted mother, & if you want to understand

your cute little daughter who is not going to turn out to fit anybody's pattern, but her own, it might be a good idea to get a subscription for yourself. That is, if you're interested. If you don't fall off of any bar stools between now & when I get home next, I might even take you to the motorcycle races, if the season is on. Your letters have been great lately, though I do detect a trace of the martyr in them. Get out & do a few racey things on your own & you'll feel better.

Did the rock & roll flu clear up? I hope so, because you'd look funny with callouses on your palms & rug burns on your knees. Next time, get a roller-skate. I really do hope that you're feeling better, though.

Sun., I went to St. Raymond's which is the closest Catholic church around here, also the one I like the best. It's more of a parish than a fashion show.

Les' wedding was ideal. Counting the minister, there were12 of us there. That also includes Les & Bob. They went to Tahoe for the weddin honeymoon. Bob is really a fine, stable fellow, with a future in his own field. They'll never be rich if he stays in college teaching, but if he's successful in

it to his own satisfaction, & since it's what he's cut out to do, that won't matter. He's 31, which isn't really too old. At that, it depends on the individual, I think. They had plain gold bands, no engagement ring. It's kind of funny, but Les & I, who think so divergintly on everything, & have so little in common, agreed completely on every aspect of her wedding, including the groom. Just talking about it has brought Les & I a lot closer. Just one thing, her parents reacted beautifully, but I still don't think that calling them up a week before the wedding & announcing that next Sat. she was marrying a fellow that they'd never even met, no matter how nice a guy he is, was not the ideal thing to do. One thing, if & when, I'll give you fair warning. I promised Mr. Millett, that, if & when, if I get disowned, he can give me away. Don't worry though, if you can't understand your black sheep, just be tolerant and don't push. It's too late in life to do any more pushing.

Hope you can read this. I'm sitting at kind of a weird angle, with my feet up on some shelves.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran into Sally [Cheddy?] up at Rudy's & passed on Elisa's news of expectation, only I couldn't remember when the little blessed event is supposed to arrive. When?

Rudy's has put in a board with hooks on it beside the bar to hold private, monogrammed mugs. Carl, one of the bartenders, has the china paint, & they fire the things right there in the oven. So now I'm going to be a mug monogrammer. I've got another order besides my own already. Liz has been recuperating at her sister's house since she got out of the hospital. She ought to be back out there before long. A fellow was telling me the other night, about the progress they've made recently, in pinning bones. Most of the ideas came of of German military medicine, WWII. Liz could easily have been in a cast for months instead of just 4 weeks of traction.

Easter Sun., I'll wear the yellow outfit you made. I really do like it. I've never had much yellow stuff before. I also like that yellow blouse you made. I've had loads of compliments on the yellow skirt. By the way, one of the girls in the dorm who sews a lot, wants to know where you got the fancy labels.

Angelo was down the weekend before finals. He's working for a subsidiary of US Steel & doing well on the stock market on the side. Things have shaped up for him in the last few months. I'm going to invite him down for the big chorus concert with the S. F. Symphony the first weekend of next quarter, since we all get 1 ticket to give away.

Even though I'm on vacation, there are millions of things to do, especially those two papers which
