Tues. 8-5-58

Dear Mother & Daddy,

Little Ike is lying here on the bed, kicking & dinging that Pink toy that Alice sent. It's the only toy she can play with while flat on her back, and she really enjoys it. She's 10 lbs. 5 oz. as of 1 week ago Mon., growing like a weed. She'll soon be ready to wear some of her cute clothes. Not being able to crawl is the bane of her life, & she got so mad about it this morning that she threw up some cereal & plopped her face in it. She must have had her eyes open when she did it, because she really howled. Her main problem is not being able to lift her pot-belly high enough, so she just lies there & swims, though she does make a little progress. She's also working on learning to turn over.

We started projectile vomiting last Sat., & now we wait on guard for her unexpected spray-jobs. One of my friend's babies vomited in her crib one night, & it hit the wall, ran down to a socket-plug & blew a fuse. So far Eileen hasn't done it in bed - yet.

We have been Avon-ing like mad this week. There's a sales contest this summer, &

I'm aiming for a prize. I put She in her basket & take her along. The ladies think she's just a doll. I casually mention that I use Avon baby products on her. She sleeps most of the time & the fresh air is good for her. How are you fixed for Avon goodies? Could you use some hormone lotion? It's great for everything except spreading on toast. This comment will not be found in our sales literature.

Thank you very much for the $10.00 birthday gift & card. On my birthday, I felt very mellow, being all of 22. In my little cloud of mellow-ness, I wrote Virginia Mary a letter filled with mischevious reminiscences & admonitions to be tolerant in the fall when she starts teaching 2nd grade.

Thurs. Things seems to be settling down again. I'm no longer physically impaired by pregnancy or convalescence & Ike is firmly established in our daily & weekly schedule. She's old enough to haul almost anywhere we go, is a good adaptable baby, so we're not the least bit tied down.

Yesterday I baked a cake, which was fine, because I used a "never-fail" mix, but the frosting recipe must have been a misprint, also I had the wrong kind of sugar. The top of the cake has the texture & durability of a cement driveway, but it doesn't taste bad, if you like crunchy frosting.

She gets fruit in her cereal now, & last night I tried prunes, & then we went over to the Hunts. While we were there, the prunes made their second entrance into this world, & when I had rinsed out the diaper & wrung it, the daschund Fritz took that diaper for her own. First she put it on her bed & sat on it, & when I threatened to repossess it, she removed it to the living room. Mike finally talked her out of it. Her interest in diapers is an entirely different kind than Jeff's. She really would have rather had the baby, but we didn't let her get close enough to find out what for. This morning She had bananas & oatmeal & loved it. We won't try prunes again until tomorrow. We use that spoon that Rosemary Gossman gave her. It's really nice. By the way, I'm way behind

on thank-you notes, so if the gurruls look sideways at you, tell them I'm still a little disorganized. I get a lot of reading done while I'm nursing, but the position prevents my doing any letter-writing.

The Baptism went beautifully. She didn't let out a peep. When Fr. T put the salt in her mouth, she smiled & smacked her lips. Edward, Betty, & Susie came, & I was glad that they were able to meet Jim's family.

Now that we're organized, why don't you two fly up together some weekend & see little Ike. The roll in the camera is almost finished & then I'll send you some good snapshots. I think I caught her in the middle of a yawn this morning. By the way, I have the wedding picture negatives & will send them to you, if you still want them.

Time to comb the pablum out of my hair & get ready to go avon-ing.

Love, Marcia
