24.1.60 evening

Hello again my darling
Well the mail doesn't seem to function so regularly on the weekends
here on else you have been busy. No letter today maybe two again
tomorrow! Im glad I can talk to you again tonight so you get
one in each days mail I hope. Is it taking mostly 3 or 4 days to
get to you? Here its mostly 3 days! It seems to makes your voice that
much closer.

Back to the visit at the Krautees yesterday. One very noticeable thing
is that they love to feed you and lost constantly first a mixture
of raspberry juice and said water (delicious) and Christmas cookies then
later on coffee (and also something which they more often drink similar
to coffee but made from roast corn instead) and kuchen of several
kinds. Then as we left she gave us more kuchen to take with us. And
of course all of it is home made and absolutely delicious! The conversation
to was pretty good our German has progressed unbelievably in 3 weeks
especially in listening ability. We talked a lot about Ailene as I said
was for example. They were both members of the Nazi PArty and while he was
fighting in Russia she worked locally in a records office. She said she
didn't really know of the atrocities because the news papers were controlled
by Hitler. She knew that jews had to wear stones on their backs and pay extra
taxes etc and she would get official notice in the office that so and so
died in Dachau (one of the worst prisons camps) from "pneumonia or
heart attack". They all knew that this was probably not the truth but
it was dangerous to ask questions one might "disappear" This fact
of internal dictatorship and control is one we Amercians too often forget
I think.

Last night was of course the fall der Nationen and it was so much
better than I had expected. I went originally because so many girls
who wanted to go couldn't get guys t take them and I wasn't really
eager (esp at DM 6.50) But both Mary Jeanette and I had a wonderful
time. It was really a Ball not a dance a ball in the old
