My dear Nannie -

Somewhere I have a belated letter begun to you, but in my efforts to straighten our room it has been misplaced. Last week was a busy one; two examinations (one of which didn't come off) and preparations for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon party. The Sigma Alpha E is a fraternity (boy) who have just finished a beautiful new house in Palo Alto and a week ago issued small invitations for a large affair both afternoon and evening. I was prepared to decline as usual but I saw that Rose very much wanted to go: and finally I consented to the persuasions of the different girls. For Rose would not go without me

But neither of us had anything to wear that was in order. But Rose found a very reasonable dressmaker, to make the little confection that I brought her from Honolulu, and looks likes a rare old portrait when dressed It was made over muslin (which was the daintiest & most inexpensive thing she could have had. The waist was a baby one - coming off at the shoulders and a wide accordian pleated ruffle around the neck. Straps to hold it up on the shoulders & a sash & bow of white satin ribbon made the daintiest gown in the room. I had a Mrs. Maxen remodel my cre'pe skirt - putting in large satin puffs in the waist instead of the diminutive

velvet sleeves. It too comes off the shoulders - and I had the same lace put on and a ribbon belt. I think I never had any thing so becoming and shall wear it when I have my picture taken. Gertrude was quite disgusted that we went but I am glad, even now that it is over, my mind is unchanged. But party going will never be my fort but as long as Rose will want to go I do not want to hinder her and she won't let me stay, while she goes. Prof. Allen asked Gertrude the last time he saw her if I would let him have Papa's Knife. He had made it and wanted it as a remembrance. So I took it over to him the last time I went.

I don't think I have written since I received back my Fr. Revoluation paper with only "Good" on it. Rose had not studied half so much on it and came off with "excellent". I was so thoroughly disgusted, that I haven't studied it since. The only satisfaction after all was that I felt I enjoyed quite a comprehensive idea of the subject so far as we had gone. You have not given us your idea as to Girls Frats. I shall not give one under any circumstances but should like to know your views so as to ward off the girls if possible when the persist longer. I am sorry Aunt Clara is having

any difficulty. It only makes one know the more the the nothingness and unreality of the ephemeral world. I am so glad to be learning where the real treasures lie.

Rose does look so well in that last winters' black dress and her new hat which has such good value in it. The neither of us [illegible] needed a new gown; and Rose grey with her black cape (which Wallace the furrier in San Francisco mended nicely for 2:50) makes a splendid every day suit.

This Friday an outdoor production of "As You Like it" is to be given, and Rose and I are going as is every one else. It is the picked talent of San Francisco, and promises

got a surry and drove us out to Allis's. - She is very much changed - for the better. She had found the repose that she lacked; but I am unable to tell whether it is great happiness or the end of a hard struggle that has brought her this peace. Mr. Bradford goes to Africa in a month - not to return for 5 years. He gives Allis no encouragement for a marriage under a year but Allis looks on the hopeful side and thinks it will be less than a year. She expects to follow him to Africa and be married there, after he is finally established. She is announcing her engagement and seems full of peace. I hope he will appreciate the rare girl that he will get when he marries Allis.

June, Rose and I hear, are is down here and very much wants to see us to get a recommendation as cook for the Fiji House! Isn't that a huge joke! He got into some difficulty at Mrs. Parks. and wrote me a long letter saying she wouldn't pay him what she owed him and beseeching me to see her in his behalf ending with profuse blessings &c &c. a letter which I paid not attention to, and I doubt if I shall recommend him. I think it will
