for me, I know that it is the least I can do to obey you.

I have decided not to go to the Game at all!

However so that my Thanksgiving may not prove too monotonous I have decided to take in the Chutes with Miss Hay. Thus I will have just as enjoyable time and not spend nearly as much money as it would cost to pay my own admission to the Foot-Ball Game.

By staying away from the Game I will have pleased you and also have saved considerable.

By the way I shall be down Friday evening to take the hat-rooms. Tell Claude to look around for somebody

to assist me. Get, if possible, the boy whose mother owns the lodging house on Market St. His name is George. Claude will know whom I refer to.

I suppose you are all pleased with the election, I am. I'm rather sorry that the "Why am I" mayor was elected, yet if he acts no worse than the A.P.A mayor of the last two years (Sutro), we will have no cause for lamentation.

I presume that all the micks in town are besieging the Phelan Building endeavouring to obtain prospective "jobs" in the City Hall. Doubtlessly they will all

Stanford University, California, Nov. 11, 1896

My dearest Mama:-

I received your welcome letter this morning, and was quite sorry to see you displeased over my suggestion concerning the F.B. Game.

Had I not already made arrangements, I would willingly do as you asked, but having invited Miss Hay I can hardly withdraw my invitation now.

Moreover it would cost just $1.50 to see the game from the Stanford "bleachers" and I would scarcely consider it worth while to attend the game and not sit with my college, and

yell for my Alma Mater.

Thus, you see, I would be fortunate to get off with an expenditure of exactly $1.50.

Now if I went to the Chutes it would cost at the most about 60-80 cents or there abouts.

I would thus be saving something, and having a far better time; and I consider my happiness more than its cost, especially when its such a small matter.

But I dont intend to miss the F. B. Game!

I intend to perch in my accustomed place on the roof that overlooks Central Park. I can see the game from here at a cost of $.00.

In the night, I intend to take in the Chutes, where, no doubht, appropriate exercise will take place in honor of the

college that wins the game.

Stanford is sure to win; and her victory will certainly be celebrated.

Now, after all, dont you think Ive done the best I could. I'm sure I would have a better time by going to the Chutes in the evening than any place else, and surely, Mama, you ought not to object to my well-earned enjoyment when I am doing it to please you, and to keep within the narrow confines of my purse.

Now don't think, that because I go with a girl a few times that I immediately become infatuated with her.

I have only invited Grace, because there were no other girls whom I would care to go with, or who are not taken up by the other fellows.

It is not by any means that I have fallen in love with Miss Hay. So you may rest assured on that point.

I have already made me date with Dr. Derchmiller and will spend a pleasant hour or two in his parlors Saturday morning.

I received Ed's ten dollars this morning and as soon as I have time will write him a fine long letter thanking him for his timely generosity.

If it does not rain on Friday afternoon I shall come down, and, as I have said before, take the hat rooms.

Well, as my writing is becoming less and less intelligible, I guess I had better close.

Your loving boy

FJ.
