Latter 1985

Prior to October 4, I had only set up AT, EGA card, played with Windows, and studied example applications in Programmer's Guide. Also took 3 trips to LA and decided I didn't want to move there.

Next 1/2 quarter had size busy weekends, exercised 26,250 stack options, move char-based Multiplan 2.00 onto my AT, (relearning Microsoft C and environment), resurrecting Windows version of MAC Multiplan, occational preliminary Windows Work design meetings, (at which I wasn't vocal at all), and resolved review by Bill Gates, and exercised final 3750 stack options, and remined Bill to offer me more. For some reason, I also reviewed 1982 + 83 piano lessions during this 1/2 quarter.

Tidied up Wimp's dialogs; distribute WIMP in house.

Jan 14, I was very frustrated with debug [-C?] but by the end of windy stormy evening Jan 16, I had finished it. On the 14th Tony also suggested I do the visual coding, which may have been my "spoonful of sugar". Got my paper on testing onto LaserJet Fri, 17th.

Fri Jan 17th I got some load rates for houses, in prepartation for comparing renting vs buying with Excel, on Sat 18th, taking everything into account. Wrote it up on Sunday 19th. Saw Out of Africa with Bob + Gary V.

JAN '86

New Year's Brunch with Bob + Gary V. Watch SNL "Party's HAD IT"

From Jan 1-12, I was primarily concerned with car shopping + financing + related issues, like metal tape quality, reading owners manual, etc., keys, parking permit, etc.

Jan 13, Tony returned from 3 week vacation, but my mind wandered to marginal cost of capital for ANY purchase, small or large, and in the afternoon realized how little Pers. Acct. takes into account relative to the broad scale of things important in life: time, friends, fun, love, good will, etc. Eye exam that day too.

Still taking care of car things, Mon 20th I started code task list for Visuals schedule, and meeting Tue. 21st, and talked wtih Chris Peters and Rick Pomell Wed 22nd, and worked on task list more on Thur 23rd, but went ski shopping that afternoon. Friday 24th shopping more, and started sketching Excel's disp-c. Saturday Boat Show. Sunday Skiing with Bob + Gary V.

Mon + Tue, more on Mac Excel, comparing Quickdraw and Windows GDI. Tony says perhaps Works won't be windows based. Start [moonage?] shopping. Wed 29th start writeup of Mac Excel. More on Thurs + AMT meeting.

FEB '86

Sat. Feb 1st was finances all day + night, and compared tax liability Sunday morning, shopping later. Mon Feb 3, Microsoft announced going public. Got Pcode environment, finished schedule.

Tues + Wed adjusting to IPO. Thurs Pcode + new spec. Fri 7th, data structures doc reading, setup new DOS, SLM/Network, moved to new office. Sat Fed 8, routine plus party with David Bruns + Bill Roper. Sun Bayliner test run, and skiing with Bob.

Mon Feb 10, boating [meerage]/insurance in morning + memory mgt and huge points in afternoon + get ps compiler etc and make Works Basic App. Tuesday too, plus read final Window Works spec v1.07, and help Bob reconcile.

Webs Feb 12, print Bob's 85 + 86 YTD reports, and enter + reconcile my Jan CMA + Cash, and printout 85. Revise Net Work with Excel. So 85 is done for Bob + me. Drinks with Keith Hopper [Sarrente?], coffee/kalua after, go to work, AND GET EMAIL THAT WORKS WON'T BE WINDOWS BASED.

After dinner go to Daddy's Dynasty + Jack [Wold]

Thurs 13th, adjust to QB2 approach, and throw out old Window doc'n. Fri Play with HP in CSL + Mem mgt. code in Works. The memory addressing scheme of 8086 finally makes sense. Play w/ QB2 COOL WAY TO USE CHAR GRAPHICS! and compare w/ Window doc to see what we won't have. Saturday Feb 16 '86 budgets + ML Media Parners. Bob + Gary "Body Heat". Sun Aerobics, Color Purple with parents + Bob, Chinese dinner, David Burns in Red Hardhat + leather. Mon Feb 17, Pres Day, ML Media Partners. Grass planted across street at Somerset Apts.

Tues Fed 18: Cancel Leschi Marina, misellany, finishing up weekend decisions Wed Feb 19: Market Research Report, first meeting iwth [Jabe], get account on piggy for Plan 2.00 research, new GREAT windows ISV toolkit, list relevant Plan code. Thurs play with PC Plan + Colors, read PC graphics, Tony gets sick. Seaswirl.

Fri 21st Study Pcode: very stack oriented, study 8086 pcodes + mem addr, and look at plan to see what is pcode + what is native.

IN PREP FOR OFFICE MOVE

Take personal stuff home. Sat Feb 22 boat shopping w/ Michael [SHILSHOLEACAPULLOS] + start Turing/Enigma. Sun: Laundromat + read Turing + put Pers. Acct. in EGA color via PC BASK.

Thurs Feb 27 was first day off due to Microsoft moving. Called [Parus] Sullivan, and Dick Thorpse, about AMT. Beautiful day, 65 degrees boat shopping with Michael again. Fri more AMT, and introduce myself to estate + gift taxes, Joe Lawrence on AMT, IRS too. "Downpour in B. Hills" with Bob + Gary

TUB CARD EXPIRES

[SorMeal]: Boats, Sun Easy morning, shop boats afternoon (w/ Bob), relax, dinner with Vi + Bob at Rusty Pelican. Mon: visit harbourview, Library to research boat engines, bumper sideswipe accident. IRS phone call recording ~ AMT.

Tues Mar 4: First day at New Microsoft. Unpack, sightsee. Evening try to do boating partnership agreement. Wed: deposit $500 on SeaRay. Mac work. Aerobics w/ Dana exhausting...had dinner with Michael at Jalisen's, and decide against partnership.

Thurs: 6502 Basic meeting. Get Audi bumper fixed. Boat matters. [Not?] work still not working. Fri 7th, greps on MP2.00 DISP2.c, and calls about financing + Michael's risk insurance. Decide to use Excel to determine equivalent monthly lease value. Look through nondisplay code of MP2.00 to see if there's anything else I'd want to code. Probably not. Sat 8th: analyzed car and boat costs. Budget boat as a gift? Are my friends worth it? Once again I've learned importance of spreadhseet, personally!! So the new cartboat were important motivators of my work on Works. Sun: budget for buying boat myself. Make Audi Loan Amortization table. List why not to get boat now. Told Boatland to forget it.

Mon Mar 10: Map Plan 2.00 using greps I made recently.

Tues: finish Map. Go to Seattle Coun Center. Wed: Due to Tony Fuss ~ schedules. Dish my work, convince myself to leave, but realize lowest level stuff is done. My work could be artistic...

Buy Mgt. Edge Software at Egghead. Get setup on Net. Thur: Harbourview and Microsoft is public [adjoined] making all other losses + lost opportunities seem insignificant. Throw out decadent stuff. Finish DOSENV and WW setup, discard old backups. Get WIMP up AGAIN. Wire up 3 way switch for PC, Z19, XENIX. See Steve Wood at gm AGAIN. [adjoined] Asymettrix has 15 people, 11 programmers. Fri starting code: OutRgch. Lunch at Pappas with Group. Print stuff on Laserjet. Sat + Sun Skiing with Bob + Ned at Milsion Ridge.

March '86 (Second Half)

Mon 17th: Study + compare Memory Mgt in Plan 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, with Shelley. Why did Plan combine Cell + Ent like Shelley does. Look at Mark O'Briens documents on biff about Max Excel and Windows Excel, memory usage. List on laser printer.

Tue 18th: Look at MAC Memory Mgt in library, and ask Marko some questions. Look at Farsight (123 clone). Enlist in Excell on Biff, poke around, list a little. Compare MAC's QD with Windows. Wed 19th: Try studing Mac Excels Draw [RWs?]. Look at old Excel code on some 68000 Xenix machine, and find Draw [Rws?]. Meet with Jeff. Thurs: Write up outline for my display algorithms and discuss with Jeff. Fri 21st discuss memos with Bill, Ed, Tony and lunch afterwords. Talk ~ skiing. Draw Screen Layout, discuss with Bill. Sat: Put boat stuff away, frame Intel [Refl?], unload [adjoined] discard a lot of heritage, reorganize. closets, buybacks.

Sun: Get organized at office. Put up pictures, misc. memors into binder, get new network [toos?] files. Get office stereo + install.

Mon 24th: Get info + think about giving Megan IRA. finishing organizing, think about coding panes, etc.

Tue: actually print out panes, using split bars. Seattle Coun Center results, help Bob reconcile credit card loans.

Wed: Line up pane lines on char boundaries, Sleeping Beauty, talk w/ Meg ~ IRA, gift, etc. PeeWees Big Adventure. Thur 27th morning work, afternoon FINALLY REALIZE I should use WIMP's code for panes, and frozen areas. Also get form to reconcile vacation ntime, and get paid for excess. Fri Put PC Plan 2.00 and MAC Excel code away - not needed anymore. That was GREAT!. Throw out Windows Excel listings. Erase Mac Excel files on Statler. Consolidate and/or throw notes to date; Read "How to defend yourself against IRS". Sat Finish "How to" and write ~ AMT. Think about first to Smelser. WRITE NOTE. Stay home "one last" Sat night.

Sun: Drizzly Easter w/ [Lilies?] Mom + Dad + Smelsers talk ~ $$ with Meg. Go home, work, relax, wach TV, go to bed. Mon 31st AIDS Vaccine possibility announced. Write up 7 week schedule, fill out tax return + mail. Talk with Jeff ~ my design.
