Historically, I must recount a bit. My investments prior to '78 were pretty minimal because I had very little cash. Indeed this is fortunate because if I'd had cash I may have tried to invest it in EDITX or some crazy mindless scheme which probably wouldn't have worked out given my lack of business skill.
But by Mid '78 I had some cash from working hard + from sale of 6800 BASIC, and from funny EDITX writeoff. I did not invest this wisely and lost a lot but it did motivate me to read a lot, thus preparing me for GMAT. Indeed it taught me lots too. Only big loss was in October since I didn't sell out as I knew I should in late September. I LEARNED WHAT IT MEANS TO LOSE $1700.
But I always wonder if I should have bought a house. But 1) I didn't want to think about leaving Chip. 2) Maybe I'd have gotten less income raise from MSoft.
