My dear Boy,

Even the sun refuses to be bright since your going. Indeed it is just now beginning to show itself for the first time. Yesterday we had a slow drizzling rain most of the day, which added to the gloominess of us all. But after due consideration we all know that what you are doing is the best thing for you at this time & we are constantly holding the thot of health & strength for you in this great work.

I take from the message we sent you, that you are going to have to pay for your own blankets, which doesn't seem quite right, & no telling how much more of that kind of thing you will run up against.

We haven't discovered any necessary articles left out from your packing unless a wash rag, which we found on the floor here. If you find yourself not supplied better get a couple in Washington. Remember to see Mary Ellen, she lives accross

from the covenanter church, & Jim [North?] & Mrs. Lane Hollinger & Cora Conger. Remember us with loving regards to them all, & of course our very best to the Shield's. Clara Albee called up Sunday night to talk to you & say good by. I think we will all feel better when the rest of the family are settled. Everything seems so uncertain with the Giffens, & Sloans, But we hope the next two weeks will get things cleared up - (good by green ink)

Must get this in the office at once so you can have it Saturday. I looked the house over for your registration papers you got from San Jose. Thinking we had to hand them in there the 5th. Guess I didn't pay proper attention when you told about it, for pops says you mailed them to some official.
