Last night I needed you. Hayden and a friend came out to dinner. The friend was a handsome big chap with a life-sized conceit and the ordinary attributes of a "good fellow." A Stanford man - Freeman Burbank - graduated in law this year and is practising here in the city. He found out I was

teased by treating me like a baby doll, and he had a fine time teasing me. I was teased, not so much because of his attitude, but because I felt I had deserved it. I had been flip and "cute", even perhaps "kittenish" - and I felt immeasurably cheapened. After they had gone I would have given the world to have had your comforting arms around me, and to have had you tell me whether it was my fault or not. Do you know, I believe you with a faith that is perfectly childlike, Wynne? I have marvelled at it myself at times. I just can't help but believe you, and it's a faith that is unshakeable.
Your wings came too today. I shall wear them always until you come home. Long ago, in a letter which I think you never got, I wished for a personal keepsake from you. This is my answer. It means much, much more to me than I can tell you. It is the symbol of our love. Tonight I went down town and could not leave your dear letter at home, so I slipped it in my waist as near

my heart as dermis and epidermis and costals and intercostals and pericardium would permit and there it stayed until I came home. And then I reread it many times. Are you wearing different wings now? And have you no idea when you'll be wandering San Francisco-ward? If you don't get home until spring, perhaps I'll be able to get a furlough then. Shall I come back to meet you? I saved all of twenty dollars this month!
We're moving Monday, into a little apartment uptown where we have our beds made and our dishes washed for us. Think how incorrigibly lazy I will grow! I'm very busy at the hospital now. I have five patients in the morning and five or six in the afternoon. It's great to be busy.
