with quilldriving [underlined] as I am my
Fathers Secretary , how I shall
like it remains to be proven.
We have been very gay
here lately, having had the
Fly & Bramble in, they are
the two surveying ships which
are to survey Bass Straits; the
former is an eighteen Brig of
400 tons and the latter a Schooner
of 200 and odd tons. The officers, of
whom there are good many, are
all sporting men but none of the crew
succeeded in killing any
Kangaroos except the Capt.
who took my dog out one evening
and killed an Old Man.
My dog is turning out a very
fine one he has now killed
3 Kangaroos by himself but

helping at a good many others
and is not 13 months old yet; I wish
you would come down here and
have a few days sport, if you
will we shall be very glad to see
you &c.
I shall enclose a puzzle which
if any of your party find out within
the space of 24 hours, they are very
clever it is a piece of paper which
is to be cut into four pieces only of the
same size and shape. Let me know
how you get on with it; and if you
cannot find it out I will send you
the right method of cutting it.
I have given you a long story
hope it will give you as much
trouble to read it as it gave me
to write it. Hoping you will excuse
