[MS 584]
Peter if not Aunt and the rest, concerning which they were not
quite determined; - My dear friend what effect has study on
your mind? I will candidly acknowledge to you that my present
immediate stides have a very chilling influence on mine, I have
oftentimes reason to say, Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord?
My Zeal appears so languid, my faith so dead, my affect-
ions almost destroyed by anxious desires after improvement in
those things which are really of minor importance; I assure
you that while every day the importance of the work to which
I have devoted myself increases in my view, every day shows me
my unworthiness, - I find within me an evil heart of unbelief al-
ways departing from the living God; - there is however, my friend
one encouragement, that God is greater than our heart. It gives
me great pleasure to reflect on the simplicy of the message which
the ministers of the gospel have to proclaim, and contrast it
with the inventions of men, - or even with that dispensation of
divine authority which the gospel has abrogated; - how does
my heart rejoice in prospect of being called to proclaim, Re-
pent and belief the Gospel; - I hope if we are spared we shall
each of us count our greatest happiness to deliver this message
and have abundant testimony that Christ is faithful to his promise
"Lo ! I am with you always"
