my ^belief^ (crossed out word) not be in vein and that their
previous lives may long be opened and oh
that they may see their Children walking
in their steps serving and fearing
the God of their fathers Papa often says
(Oh the pleasures of Religion) which comfort
you must now receive from it did you
ever read Montgomery's poems speaking
of religion he says
"Believe from realms of light decend
The friend of him who has no friend
Religion! Her almighty breath.
Brothers the mind and waves of death
She bids the storms of frenzy cease,
and smiles a calm and whispers peace" (sentence underlined)

I'm so glad that this letter was not 'consigned to the flames'! (If I have transcribed D H Griffith correctly) :)
