My Dear James I sit to answer your letter at once having had it just put into my hand - We have been anxious to hear how your Mother got on but in vain until I received news - Who would have thought of that old horse kicking her, but I am glad they got so far safely -

You will find by my note to your Mother that I have been in Sydney - It was to me one of the most unpleasant visits I ever made on account of Mr Howes's not being able to make up what he promised me this [indecipherable} I verily believe through the sale of wool had it realized 15d as he expected I should have been settled with but the fall has been so great that I know not what to do or say - I am sadly afraid

[MS 407] Friday 20 Decr 50 My Dear James I have only just returned from Bathurst but as it post day I hasten to answer yours of 14th. My journey to Bathurst in a temporal point of view has not been very satisfactory the Country looking very desolate crops nearly all a failure & sheep very poor etc etc I went alone & hoped Geo would come back with me but he got one of my old Companions which prevented his riding so that I had to come down alone - I preached at Bathurst morng & eveng on the 8th and at OConnell Plains on 15th. The Chapel has been in Clerical (Church?) language beautified - The Congregations were very large & attentive I also

many things - You are certainly entitled to your full Salary from the [indecipherable] - And should have written to the Col Treasury immmediately you received your Licence - - Mr James (Secry) ought on sending the Licence to have reported it at the proper Office [-ally] he has done so - I think it wise to write to the Cashier of the Commerical Bank to send you your account they would do it - and then you would be enabled to see how you [st_] there - Clouds & darkness seem to be gathering round us all - I am informed that the best part of Mr Rileys tenant Vermont are going off for Vermont - Your Uncle James seems determined to go somewhere - Thus I fear we shall have been walls to preach to - A letter from Wollongong for George came by post yesterday I opened it to find that is is from Mr

performed Divine Service at Binsings on Tuesday last the eveng was stormy but the Congregation was good & attentive - I do not see what we can do about Boyd I find that Harris's lease is not up for 2 years I thought he had only one to run.

George hopes to be down in a few days - I know not what we shall do about the Cattle from Mr Ban? - Should I come up I should like to go to the Crookwell & if possible to Boorooa - My best love to the "Hay Makers" I saw Uncle Natt & Mrs N & John Norton last eveng at Fairlight the former

looks much older than when I last saw him - We staid at Rev ? here Chas & Maryanne came [missing] & returned with me this [missing]

I have let the Farm at the [missing] to a Son of Mr Jas Tabers - othewise Boyd might have taken that - As it is I see no prospect for them in this Quarter. Your Mother expects Lizzy Lethbridge here shortly [missing] way up to Mr. - and She thinks that Eliza might accompany her so that you had better not make any arrangement about coming to meet her until you hear again about it - All are well probablly we could send her as far as Marulan some how. In haste with best love to Fanny Ever Your affectionate Fa[ther] Tho Hassall

My Dear James I have agreed with Hunt to take the things from [-als] at 10/per Cart (?) & I settle with his wife for the same. It is true James Shelley is coming up but when is uncertain and as Hunt offered I thought it best to send them with him. He expects to be at Marulan about the end of the week & will leave them at Mr Peterson's - I trust you will get them all safe - Your Mother went down with me to Parra last week & we came home on Friday the road was very heavy & we did not reach home until about 7 or 8 - It has been very miserable since & of course the roads are heavy - Babyard
