and he and his family sailed for Tahiti in the Duff in 1796. A second son had been born on 13
May 1796 before they left England and he was given the name of Samuel Otoo in honour of the
Tahitian King.37 It was said in the family that this name proved to be an embarrassment as it
offended Tahitian custom.
