the Government there is always the utmost Difficulty
in even obtaining the consideration of any subject
of Colonial or other Policy by the Home Government.
And on such a Question as the renewal of the Trans-
-portation what Prospect could you have held
out to yourselves of it Petitions being entertained here which
had not received the Sanction of the Office who
is charged with the Administration of the Colony?
I was enabled to gather this a Channel by which by
your great want of address you have done all in
your power to close against me, that such at least
were the Sentiments of those in authority here. The
Petitions are therefore so much Waste Paper – for to
moot the subject without a Prospect of success would
be a useless revival here of those feelings of dislike
to New South Wales, which have commenced to
subside in the English Mind. Prejudices they may
be – they are at least honest ones – and much evil
would have been done by running counter to them.
I will in the course of a few days write to the

the United Kingdom going so great a distance, with no
better Prospect than to be employed on the Roads, the same
objection would not hold good with respect to Foreigners.
If it were permitted to introduce by means of the
Funds belonging to Immigration, a Proportion of Germans
to be located in such numbers in each District as to
be equal to the maintenance of its Roads – all that would
be necessary would be to state the nature of the Labour to
be performed with the Remuneration – and I have no
doubt there would be more volunteers than would be
needed from Germany.

I have done and am doing all that I can do with
regard to Immigration. The English Press is partly hostile
to the Subject, partly supine to it. The Standard gives
me a little aid. But in quarters more influential there
