advantageous, as those of the last sale, which show a Return
to the Rates of years long past the balance would have been
very considerably lessened indeed. The average of the last
Sale is almost 2/. and that in the entire importation for
the year, no more than 1s/9¼ which after deducting 2d½ for
the Average of the Charges reduces the nett average to 1s/6¾

So much for Money Transactions.

The day before yesterday I received a Letter from the Society of
Arts to say that their "Isis Gold Medal for Wines and dried
Fruits" has been awarded to you. I have written to know
whether according to the Terms of the printed advertizement
of the Society you are to have the Medal for each of those
Imports, & have requested that the Medal or Medals may
be addressed to you to the care of Herries & Co. To trouble
them any more about Church Plate would have been
useless, as the Regulations of no large Society can be
departed from without a vote of their Committee, which for
the sake of an Individual is not to be expected.

The Post of this Morning brought me a Letter from Lord
Devon, who after thanking me for two very interesting
Papers on Colonization adds that the subject is one
which has very frequently occupied his attention, and in
the course of the year he hopes to be able to call the atten-
tion of others to the subject more influential than him-[self]
